Short-Term Fellowships
Researchers with short-term fellowships spend one to two months investigating specific collection items that are essential to their scholarship. These fellowship opportunities are open to scholars at the ABD stage and beyond.

General Fellowships
Supporting scholars who demonstrate a specific need for the Newberry collection.

The John S. Aubrey Fellowship

Newberry-ACM Fellowships are open to all qualified candidates, while encouraging applications from individuals from underrepresented groups in the professoriate, including African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, other Pacific Islanders, first generation college students, and individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to college.
Stipend: $3,000/month

Topic-Specific Fellowships
Supporting scholars who wish to study the period between 1660 and 1815 and demonstrate a specific need for the Newberry’s collection.
Stipend: $3,000/month

Who can apply: Applicants must be members of the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies at the time of the application and through the period of the fellowship.

This fellowship commemorates Schutte’s renowned scholarship and is available to early-career scholars studying the early modern period (1300-1700).

Fellowships for Scholars of North American Indian Heritage
Supporting women of American Indian heritage. Preference for this award is given to non-tenured women working in any graduate or pre-professional field. Scholars working in all fields are welcome to apply.

Fellowships for Writers, Artists, and Other Humanists
Offering one month of support for a person working in the visual and performing arts who wishes to advance their artistic practice through the use of the Newberry collection.
Stipend: $3,000/month
Length: 1 month
Who can apply: Artists and performers including (but not limited to) painters, sculptors, choreographers, dramaturgs, creative writers, composers, and others in artistic fields. Those working in traditional academic settings are not eligible.

This fellowship is for writers, journalists, filmmakers, visual and performing artists, and other humanists who wish to use the Newberry’s collection to further their creative work. Preference is given to individuals working on projects that focus on social justice or reform.
Stipend: $3,000/month

Who can apply: Applicants must be individuals working outside of traditional academic settings.

Offering one month of support for a person working in the area of historical fiction. We encourage applications relating to a wide range of historical fiction including novels, short stories, plays and theatrical works, or poetry.

Consortium Member Fellowships
Providing one month of support for a project in American Indian studies.
Stipend: $5,000/month
Length: 1 month
Who can apply: Faculty members from an institution participating in the Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies.

Providing one to two months of support to graduate students working on projects related to American Indian studies. NCAIS Graduate Student Fellowships may be used to fund research at the Newberry and/or other institutions..

Who can apply: Graduate students from institutions participating in the Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies.

Supporting one postdoctoral scholar and one PhD candidate who are working on projects in medieval, Renaissance, or early modern studies.
Stipend: $3,000/month
Length: 1 month
Who can apply: Postdoctoral scholars and PhD candidates from institutions participating in the Newberry Center for Renaissance Studies Consortium. Full-time faculty members, adjunct faculty, librarians, and curators are eligible as postdoctoral scholars. Graduate student applicants must be ABD by the application deadline.

Other Fellowships
This fellowship supports research projects that make use of collections in any department in the British Library and those at the Newberry. The fellowship supports at least four weeks of research between both the British Library and the Newberry, with at least one week of research time at each institution. A projected schedule of study must be outlined as part of the application. Applicants must propose a research project that makes equal use of primary source material found in any collection of the British Library as well as in the Newberry.

Preference is given to graduate students, recent PhDs, early career scholars, adjunct faculty, independent scholars, librarians, or curatorial staff who otherwise do not have access to departmental research funds.

Supporting researchers working on historical editing projects in preparation of a scholarly edition.
Stipend: $3,000/month

Who can apply: Postdoctoral scholars.

Supporting researchers using the Rudolph Ganz Papers and other late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century materials related to Chicago music in that period. Ganz’s papers include musical compositions of the world-renowned concert pianist, composer, conductor, and educator, as well as articles, speeches, lectures and essays by him, and two recordings.
Stipend: $3,000/month

This fellowship adds one additional month of support to a long-term fellowship for research at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The proposed project must describe the materials to be consulted at both the Newberry Library and the Herzog August Bibliothek. The recipient should plan to visit the libraries sequentially to ensure continuity of research.
Stipend: $3,000 from the Newberry plus up to $500 for travel expenses and one month of funding provided by the Herzog August Bibliothek: 1,800 EUR plus up to 650 EUR for travel expenses.
Length: 2 months (1 month at the Newberry, 1 month at the Herzog August Bibliothek)

Providing one month of support for faculty from any IES center.
Stipend: $1,200/month

Who can apply: Postdoctoral scholars living outside the Chicago area.

This fellowship enables a qualified Northwestern University PhD English candidate to spend one quarter conducting research full time at the Newberry. Recipients are expected to present their research at a Newberry Colloquium, a chapter of their dissertation at a Fellows’ Seminar, and participate in the scholarly community during their residency.
Stipend: Equivalent to a Northwestern University Fellowship stipend; tuition will be provided for the quarter.
Length: 1 quarter
Who can apply: PhD candidates in English at Northwestern University.

This fellowship allows one PhD candidate to spend a semester abroad at the École Nationale des Chartes in Paris and one affiliate of the École Nationale des Chartes to travel to Chicago to conduct research at the Newberry.
Who can apply to study at the École: To be eligible to study at the École, applicants must be PhD candidates from a U.S. or Canadian university who have achieved ABD status by the application deadline. The fellowship covers auditor tuition and a portion of living expenses (up to one term) in Paris for a period of three months.
Who can apply to study at the Newberry: Students, faculty members, and alumni of the École Nationale des Chartes are eligible to apply for the exchange program to conduct research at the Newberry. If selected by the École Nationale des Chartes, the recipient is required to submit an abstract, project description, and CV in English to the Newberry. The Newberry will provide a stipend of $2,500.
How to apply: Applications to study at the École must be submitted through the Newberry SlideRoom system. Applications to study at the Newberry must be made directly to the École Nationale des Chartes at the following address: Relations internationales et Stages, International relations, École nationale des chartes, 65 Rue de Richelieu, 75002 Paris, France.

One former fellow from the Newberry may apply for a one-month fellowship at the John Rylands Research Institute and Library at the University of Manchester (JRRI), and vice versa.
Stipend: $3,000 USD (or equivalent in GBP)/month
Length: 1 month
Who can apply: Former Newberry fellows (long- or short-term) may apply for a month in residence at the JRRI. Former JRRI fellows may apply for one month of fellowship at the Newberry.

The Newberry is a member of the Consortium for the History of Science, Technology, and Medicine, which supports fellowships at member institutions across the US. The consortium offers multiple fellowship opportunities each year for scholars in the history of science, technology or medicine.
