General Fellowships

Supporting scholarship in any field relevant to the Newberry’s collection.

Stipend: $5,000/month

Length: 4 - 9 months

Who can apply: Applicants must be United States citizens or foreign nationals with three continuous years’ residence in the US. Having a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) by the application deadline is required.

Supporting scholarship related to history and literature in the Late Medieval and Early Modern period. Preference will be given to projects focusing on the colonial Americas and Romance cultures, especially translations and topics focusing on Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin American Studies.

Supporting a pre-tenure woman whose work points to a future of scholarly productivity and who would benefit significantly from being in residence at the Newberry. Preference will be given to projects concerned with the study of women.

Other Fellowships

The Rudolph Ganz Fellowship supports researchers using the Rudolph Ganz Papers and other late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century materials related to Chicago music in that period. Ganz’s papers include musical compositions of the world-renowned concert pianist, composer, conductor, and educator, as well as articles, speeches, lectures and essays by him, and two recordings.

Stipend: $5,000/month

Length: 4 - 9 months

Who can apply: Having a PhD (or equivalent terminal degree) by the application deadline is required.

Deadline: November 1

How to Apply

This fellowship is intended to support faculty members from institutions participating in the Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Preference will be given to scholars at an early stage in their career. Fellows must work on a project in American Indian Studies that requires research in the Newberry’s collection.

Stipend: $5,000/month

Length: 4 - 9 months

Who can apply: Faculty from NCAIS member institutions.

How to Apply

This fellowship adds one additional month of support to a long-term fellowship for research at the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, Germany. The proposed project must describe the materials to be consulted at both the Newberry Library and the Herzog August Bibliothek. The recipient should plan to visit the libraries sequentially to ensure continuity of research.

Stipend: 1,800 Euro/month from the Herzog August Bibliothek, plus up to 650 Euro for travel expenses.

Length: 1 additional month added to an awarded Newberry fellowship listed above + 1 month at the Herzog August Bibliothek

Who can apply: Anyone with a PhD by the application deadline.
