Construction Is Underway!

The new year has ushered in a new chapter for the Newberry: the beginning of a first-floor renovation to provide visitors with more opportunities to interact with collections and staff, right after entering the library!

At the end of the six-month project, the Newberry will welcome visitors into a more welcoming environment that will include an information and welcome center, a climate-controlled seminar room, an expanded bookstore, and galleries for both temporary and permanent exhibitions.

Throughout construction, the library reading rooms will remain open, and the Newberry will continue to offer public programs and adult education seminars. The Newberry Bookstore and exhibition galleries, however, will be closed while they’re upgraded as part of the renovation.

For the first few months of construction, from January through late April, the library's main entrance (on Walton Street) will be closed. During this time, visitors are asked to use the north doors, accessible through the staff parking lot on Oak Street.
