Behind-the-Scenes Speaker Series: The President's Reception

The Behind-the-Scenes Speaker Series is a virtual program series exclusively for supporters of the Newberry. These short talks are designed to introduce you to our staff, keep you updated on the latest from the library, and provide you with a behind-the-scenes view of upcoming programs and projects.

In this special installment of the Behind-the-Scenes Speaker Series, Newberry President Daniel Greene was joined in conversation by LaDale Winling, the Newberry’s 2020-21 Lloyd Lewis Fellow in American History. The two explored the role that institutions and individuals have played in building — and battling — the structures of racial segregation that have shaped Chicago across the last two centuries. Attendees also heard how Winling’s research intersects with a collaboration between WBEZ and the Newberry Library to research land records, covenants, and restrictions on real estate throughout Cook County and metro Chicago.

This event was held live on Zoom on June 16, 2021. You can watch a recording of the event below.

We look forward to sharing more content in the year ahead. Keep an eye on your email for invitations to future events.
