The Behind-the-Scenes Speaker Series is a virtual program series exclusively for supporters of the Newberry. These short talks are designed to introduce you to our staff, keep you updated on the latest from the library, and provide you with a behind-the-scenes view of upcoming programs and projects.
On April 22, supporters joined Rose Miron, Director of the D'Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian and Indigenous Studies, and Blaire Topash-Caldwell, Mellon Public Humanities Fellow, for an update on the Newberry's collaborative work with tribal and community partners.
Building on its long-standing commitment to serving and partnering with Indigenous scholars, students, and members of the public, the Newberry is holding listening sessions with Native communities to learn more about their needs and priorities. Actively consulting its project partners, the library is also preparing to update catalog records and other research tools to increase searchability, reflect accurate Native terminology (Ojibwe instead of Chippewa, for example) and adopt workflows and policies that prioritize Native protocols regarding when and how certain items are to be accessed. This multiyear project is supported by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
